Description
Rare original snapshot of the gravesite of Capt Oscar L. Housel,
who died of disease in France, Aug 19, 1918.
He was a member of Co A 38th Engineers.
I found this photo randomly mixed in with other non-related photos at a recent auction.
I was able to research Capt Housel so please review some of the images below.
The research items are not included with the sale of the photo but the buyer is welcome to print them.
I am including a second photo that was found with the Housel image. This one is simply labeled "Buddy 38 Eng."
Nice full body photograph of another member of the 38th Engineers.
Each snapshot is original and measure approx 5-1/2 x 3-1/4. Overall in good condition, both photos are rolled
and do not lie flat.
The Housel photo has a corner missing but does not interfere with the scene.
It appears that Oscar Housel was born in Knox County IL in 1877, attended the University of Illinois and graduated with the class of 1901 (See image). He apparently accepted an engineer job near Washington DC and moved from Illinois. Housel did serve in the Spanish American War with the Sixth Illinois Hospital Corps.
Captain Housel's remains were eventually transferred to Arlington National Cemetery in 1920.
You may view the record of this below.
WE ALL THANK CAPTAIN OSCAR L. HOUSEL FOR HIS SACRIFICE.
